EDISON BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN LONG BEACH MOVES FORWARD WITH RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION

BY BRIAN ADDISON, THE LONG BEACH POST

Bought for $2.1M after closing escrow in June of 2013, the famed 1959 Kenneth Wing-designed building between 1st & Broadway has seen a plethora of activity as crews finally begin the process of making for a 150-unit mixed use complex.

The mid-century modern masterpiece has been a beautiful–albeit depressing, given its slow decay over the past decade–example of Long Beach architecture. With clean lines, repetition, and ten stories of possibilities, the building–even for the most common of passersby seemed to be alive with redevelopment opportunities but was vacant since 2005 before it was purchased by Ratkovich Properties.

The building will feature studios, 1 bedrooms, and 2 bedrooms, all with interiors designed by Kelly Wearstler Interiors. Polished concrete floors and ceiling heights averaging between 11 and 14 feet will be accompanied with nine-foot high, electronically-operable glass windows.

Among the building’s amenities will be a rooftop deck with a pool, community lounge, kitchen, grills, cabanas and fireplaces. Completely on the opposite end, a ground-level cafe and wine bar will serve residents, as well a courtyard lounge, a fitness and yoga center, dog washing stations, a bike storage and work station, a conference center, and storage units.

The building, located at 100 Long Beach Blvd., is expected to be completed in fall of 2015. Rent and purchase prices are to be determined.
